UT Austin Dorm Packing List 2026:
What to Ship vs. What to Bring
By Samantha Hale · June 2026
Packing for a UT Austin dorm is one of those tasks that sounds manageable until you're standing in the middle of a fully assembled life trying to figure out what fits in a car. We've helped dozens of families move into UT Austin dorms and apartments, and the biggest lesson we've learned: the list doesn't need to be shorter — it needs to be smarter.
The key is knowing what to ship ahead and what to bring with you. Here's how we break it down.
Ship Ahead: The Big, Bulky, and Orderable Stuff
Anything you can order online should be shipped directly to a receiving address in Austin well before move-in day. This keeps your car manageable and takes pressure off your move-in time window.
- Twin XL bedding set (sheets, comforter, pillow — check UT dorm bed dimensions first)
- Mattress topper
- Towels and bath mat
- Shower caddy, toiletry organizers
- Over-the-door organizers and hooks
- Desk lamp and power strip (surge-protected)
- Laundry hamper and detergent pods
- Under-bed storage containers
- Mini fridge (if allowed and not provided)
- Coffee maker or electric kettle
- Plastic drawers or closet organizers
- Cleaning supplies and paper towels
- Hangers (more than you think)
- Full-length mirror
- Command hooks and strips (no holes in the walls)
Austin stores sell out fast. Don't plan to buy bedding or storage bins when you arrive. Target, Walmart, and The Container Store near campus are completely wiped out by move-in weekend. Order everything online and ship it ahead.
Bring in the Car: Personal, Valuable, and Hard to Ship
Reserve your car space for things that are irreplaceable, fragile, or just don't make sense to ship.
- Laptop and chargers
- Sentimental items — photos, awards, anything breakable or irreplaceable
- A week's worth of clothing (the rest can come later or be shipped)
- Medications and health items
- Backpack and school supplies for the first week
- Noise-canceling headphones
- Any bulky items you're bringing from home that can't be ordered new
What Most Families Overpack
Skip It
- A full wardrobe — they'll wear 20% of it
- Extra sets of dishes — one or two mugs and bowls is enough
- Books from home — everything is digital or available at the library
- Decorative items "just in case" — less is more in a dorm
- Extra bedding sets — one is enough for now
People Forget
- Umbrella
- First aid kit
- Sewing kit and stain remover
- Shower flip flops
- Extra charging cables
- Fan (Austin is hot well into October)
- Quarters for laundry
UT Austin Dorm-Specific Notes
Not all UT Austin dorms are the same — setup depends heavily on which building your student is in.
- Jester: High-rise, tiny rooms. Storage is at a premium. Prioritize vertical organizers and under-bed storage.
- Kinsolving: Slightly larger rooms. A great hall for those who want a more community-feel dorm.
- Moore-Hill, Roberts, Prather: Traditional-style rooms. Bunk or loft bed setups are common — confirm your assignment.
- San Jacinto: Newer building, air-conditioned, slightly more modern layout.
- Off-campus apartments near West Campus: Much more storage, but you're usually furnishing from scratch. Give yourself extra time and budget.
Before you finalize your packing list, look up your student's specific building and confirm the room dimensions from the housing portal. Some halls provide a desk, dresser, and wardrobe — others provide only the basics.
